Der Autor des vorliegenden Buches ist kein Unbekannter, hat er doch eine Doktoratsthese über die Waldenser des Luberon und () eine Synthese über die Geschichte der Waldenser vorgelegt (Les vaudois du Luberon. Une minorité en Provence, -, Mérindol , und Les vaudois. Histoire d'une dissidence, XIIe-XVIe siècle, Paris ), beides Werke, die nicht umsonst sehr gelobt worden sind (und das zweite auch mehrfach übersetzt).Beim vorliegenden Buch handelt es sich um die englische Übersetzung eines Buches, das vorgängig nicht in Französisch erschienen ist. Gabriel Audisio befasst sich darin mit den Häresiarchen der Waldenser, und zwar vornehmlich denjenigen der romanischen Waldenser, den sog. Barben. Die Bewegung der Waldenser hatte sich im dreizehnten Jahrhundert unter dem Einfluss der Verfolgung in Häresiarchen und Häretiker aufgespaltet, von denen nur mehr die ersteren die ursprünglichen waldensischen Gebote der Armut, der Predigt und des direkten Zugangs zu den biblischen Texten befolgten. Die ausgedehnte Diaspora brachte mit sich, dass sich zwei Flügel ausbildeten, die kaum noch Kontakt miteinander hatten, die deutschen und die romanischen Waldenser. Bei den deutschen Waldensern wurden die Häresiarchen "Meister" oder "Beichtiger" genannt, bei den romanischen eben "Barben", was gleichbedeutend war mit Onkel und für respektierte Personen verwendet wurde.Erstmals widmet der Autor auch den deutschen Häresiarchen ein Kapitel (Kap. , ‚Die Brüder'), doch geht er hier nicht ganz soweit, wie er hätte gehen können, denn auch hier kennt man dank der Inquisitionen, die der Coelestinerinquisitor Peter Zwicker Ende des vierzehnten Jahrhundert in der Mark Brandenburg und in Pommern durchführte, doch immerhin rund fünfzehn Namen von Häresiarchen, in der grossen Mehrheit Herkunftsnamen, die auf eine grosse geographische Ausdehnung der deutschen Waldenser schliessen lassen (siehe Dietrich Kurze, ‚Zur Ketzergeschichte der Mark Brandenburg und Pommerns vornehmlich im .
