A sample of 446 college students completed a questionnaire measuring 20 expectancies regarding counseling. After item analysis the instrument was reduced to 135 items comprising 17 expectancy scales. Scale scores were calculated for each subject on these scales, and the data were analyzed using principal-components analysis with varimax rotation. Evidence of four expectancy factors was obtained. To clarify the interpretation of the factors, scores on the four factors were correlated with subjects' responses to 13 items measuring how realistic the respondents' expectancies were.
