Purpose Lie detection in insurance claim settings is difficult as liars can easily incorporate deceptive statements within descriptions of otherwise truthful events. We examined whether the Verifiability Approach (VA) could be used effectively in insurance settings. According to the VA, liars avoid disclosing details that they think can be easily checked, whereas truth tellers are forthcoming with verifiable details. Method The study experimentally manipulated notifying claimants about the interviewer's intention to check their statements for verifiable details (the ‘Information Protocol’). It was hypothesized that such an instruction would (1) encourage truth tellers to provide more verifiable details than liars and to report identifiable witnesses who had witnessed the event within their statements, and (2) would enhance the diagnostic accuracy of the VA. Participants reported 40 genuine and 40 fabricated insurance claim statements, in which half the liars and truth tellers were notified about the interviewer's intention to check their statements for verifiable details. Results Both hypotheses were supported. In terms of accuracy, notifying claimants about the interviewer's intention to check their statements for verifiable details increased accuracy rates from around chance level to around 80%. Conclusion The VA, including the information protocol, can be used in insurance settings.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common sleep-related breathing disorder. Repetitive pauses in breathing during sleep cause a brief but recurrent decrease in oxygen saturation in organs and tissues (chronic intermittent tissue hypoxia). Many studies have proven a pro-inflammatory status in OSA patients. However, few reports are available on the effects of OSA on the cellular immune system, mostly focusing on single immune cell types and their subtypes. The aim of this Mini-Review is to summarize these reports, as OSA is associated with a high prevalence and comorbidities such as atherosclerosis, which are known to involve the cellular immune system.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with sleep-stage- and respiratory-event-specific sensorimotor cortico-muscular disconnection. The modulation of phase–amplitude cross-frequency coupling (PACFC) may influence information processing throughout the brain. We investigated whether sleep-stage-specific PACFC is impaired at the sensorimotor areas in OSA patients. C3 and C4 electrode EEG polysomnography recordings of 170 participants were evaluated. Different frequency band combinations were used to compute CFC modulation index (MI) to assess if MI differs between OSA and non-significant OSA patients in distinct sleep stages. We tested if the CFC-MI could predict daytime sleepiness in OSA. Theta–gamma CFC-MI at cortical sensorimotor areas was significantly reduced during all sleep stages; the delta–alpha CFC-MI was significantly reduced during REM and N1 while increasing during N2 in patients with respiratory disturbance index (RDI) > 15/h compared to those with RDI ≤ 15/h. A sleep stage classification using MI values was achieved in both patient groups. Theta–gamma MI during N2 and N3 could predict RDI and Epworth Sleepiness Scale, while delta–alpha MI during REM predicted RDI. This increase in disconnection at the cortical sensorimotor areas with increasing respiratory distress during sleep supports a cortical motor dysfunction in OSA patients. The MI provides an objective marker to quantify subjective sleepiness and respiratory distress in OSA.

The link between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and obesity, and their common comorbidities such as diabetes mellitus (DM) or cardiovascular diseases, is not fully understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible association of OSA severity in obese individuals with polysomnography-based sleep parameters, as well as C-reactive protein (CRP) and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) serum levels. Polysomnographic recordings and blood samples were retrospectively compared between a group of 23 adult obese individuals with mild OSA (apnea–hypopnea index (AHI) = 7.5 (5.5–12.5)/h, age = 42.57 ± 11.44 years, 16 male, 7 female, body mass index (BMI) = 37.35 ± 3.88 kg/m²) and an age-, sex-, and BMI-matched group of individuals with moderate or severe OSA (AHI 41.5 (25.7–71.8)/h, age = 43.43 ± 11.96 years, 16 male, 7 female, BMI = 37.87 ± 4.74 kg/m²). All respiratory sleep-associated parameters were significantly higher in individuals with moderate and severe OSA compared to those with mild OSA. CRP levels did not differ between the two OSA severity groups. However, serum levels of HbA1c were significantly higher in the moderate/severe OSA group. Therefore, OSA severity may have a significant impact on glycemic control in obese individuals. Additionally, OSA severity did not appear to be further associated with systemic inflammation in obese individuals. Obese individuals may benefit not only from lifestyle modification, but also from OSA screening and treatment, particularly to prevent DM-associated disorders and conditions.
