The study is devoted to the functioning and changes in the subject of law in Juliusz Słowacki’s works. The author reconstructs poet’s law imaginarium and shows how it was incorporated into his literary work. The publication reflects on the issues concerning scientific and professional life of Juliusz Słowacki. The book carefully analyses the connections between legal culture and Sarmatism, the influences of other legal traditions (English , Russian and Spartan) and the court scenes in tragedies.
The aim of this article is to present Juliusz Słowacki’s statements regarding the American continent. Though the research material is limited, it can be surmised that Słowacki consistently viewed the Mundus Novus (both its northern and southern parts) as a realm of contradiction: on the one hand a place, where positively perceived democratic changes took place, and on the other a land permanently stained with the crime of its colonisers. The introductory part of the text presents the poet’s inspirations from the American prose of Chateaubriand and the adventure novels of James Fenimore Cooper. Further on, I focus on Słowacki’s adolescent works. Although he never chose to depict the idyllic American wilderness, his poems Oda do młodości and Do Michała Rola Skibickiego revealed a strong connection between the symbolism of the botanical world and the historical changes which occurred after the continent’s discovery up till the American Revolutionary War and Bolivar’s activity in South America. The aforementioned contradictions also appeared when Native American characters were mentioned – praise of the noble, innocent savage were mixed with stereotypes and mocking depictions of North American Indians. Another important topic is Słowacki’s change of opinion concerning the US, expressed in a letter to his mother from 1834, in which he makes known how disappointed he is about American pragmatism and lack of ideals. In the final part of the text, I juxtapose Fanny Calderon de la Barca’s traveller’s account from her time in Mexico with Słowacki’s notes on this work and discuss an anecdote about Christopher Columbus from one of the letters to Salomea Bécu.
The article is concerned with the idea of confederation in Juliusz Słowacki’s political writings from 1846 to 1849. The possibility of forming a confederation, which the poet perceived through the lens of the tradition of the Bar Confederation and the actions of the Polish parliament-in-exile, was portrayed as a viable solution in the then political situation. It was not meant to be viewed simply as a military gathering, but primarily a national community founded on a spiritual basis. Słowacki’s idealistic attitude toward the historical legacy of the Noble Republic led him to undertake a failed attempt at organizing his own confederation and prompted him to actively participate in the events of the Spring of Nations in Poznań.
The dissertation Obraz literatury średniowiekowych ludów, a mianowicie Słowian i Niemców [The Literature of Medieval Peoples: Slavs and Germans] was published in Warsaw in 1856. It was a translation of a study by the French philologist and comparatist Frédéric Gustave Eichhoff. The original text was signifi cantly modifi ed and supplemented by Wacław Aleksander Maciejowski, a Polish historian of law and specialist on Slavic culture. The article identifi es the parts of the text that Maciejowski added, as this allows for a reconstruction of his general views on Slavic poetry, including the differences between folk ballad traditions of the Slavic nations, as well as between Slavic and Western European folk ballads (primarily Germany). Maciejowski’s views on the development of the literatures of various European nations by the mid-nineteenth century have also been discussed.
Wanda Malecka’s literary work remains a proof of her gradual acknowledgment of woman role in society. In the 1810’s and 1820’s she was experimenting with different Enlightment era literary genres, such as dialogue, fable and anecdote. The representation of femininity portrayed in those works was consequently mocking. The romantic poem “Wyjątek z historycznego poematu Wanda” marks the second phase, as it brings heroic lead female character, attributed with male features and desires. In the 1830’s the author focused on short sentimental novels, where the issues concerning gender inequalities were most visible.
