The true cultural history of Czernovitz has been masked by a mythology based largely on romanticized accounts. In order to better understand the background to this city's rich literary production, a fresh approach is required: an approach that should counter the romantic mythology of Czernovitz, stressing the city's role as a 'space of communication' as opposed to a 'location of memory'. Whereas the Czernovitz German literature has been the subject of academic research since the 1980s, the Czernovitz German-language press, and its connections with the Yiddish and Hebrew presses, has not yet been studied. The following article highlights the importance of this press, which flourished in Czernovitz during the Interwar period, when the city was an enclave of a thriving multilingual culture, highly literate, intellectual, and predominantly Jewish.
