Atividades humanas como a disposição inadequada de resíduos líquidos e sólidos, uso desenfreado de fertilizantes e a utilização de combustíveis fósseis, tem promovido alterações no ciclo natural do nitrogênio. A presença desse composto nos seus diferentes estados de oxidação é indicativo de contaminação em corpos hídricos e de possíveis condições sanitárias insatisfatórias. Assim, este estudo avaliou o uso potencial de uma nanoargila montmorilonita modificada com aminopropiltrietoxisilano e octadecilamino e de uma sílica gel modificada com 3-aminopropiltrietoxisilano como adsorventes para a remoção do ânion nitrato a partir de soluções aquosas sintéticas. Para isso, utilizou-se soluções sintéticas contendo 20 mg/L de nitrogênio na forma de nitrato (NO3- -N), a fim de comparar as porcentagens de remoção obtida com os materiais em estudo. A caracterização do melhor adsorvente foi realizada utilizando uma estimativa da carga da superfície do material, o Ponto de Carga Zero (PZC), com faixa de pH variando entre 1 e 12. Foram realizados ensaios para avaliar o efeito da dosagem do adsorvente (com massas de 50, 100, 150, 200, 250 e 300 mg) e efeito do pH (2, 4, 6, 8 e 10). Os resultados revelaram que a argila obteve maior eficiência de remoção. O pH ácido foi o mais favorável para a adsorção de nitrato na argila aminofuncionalizada. As remoções da nanoargila selecionada chegaram a aproximadamente 70% em determinadas condições experimentais, dessa forma é possível constatar que argilas aminofuncionalizadas podem ser utilizadas como adsorventes na remoção de nitrato de águas.
