ABSTRACTIn the conservation and restoration of patrimonial categories and in specific material cultural patrimony, technical treatments of the degradations that occur in objects that have historical and aesthetic value, lead to the search for constructive knowledge of the past and the present. This paper reports a study of Scientific Initiation held at the Federal University of Sergipe in the Department of Architecture and Urbanism between August 2017 and July 2018, in the area of materials, which analyzed and characterized mortars of the Church of N. S a do Amparo dos Homens Pardos built in the mid of the eighteenth century in the city of São Cristóvão, State of Sergipe. General objective is to know the production of old mortars and find alternatives to "cure" pathologies related to phenomena such as moisture, crystallization, "leprosy" and other agents to which patrimonial objects are susceptible. Therefore, old well-known techniques of "sanitation" restoring for mortars are revealed, properties and characteristics of restoration mortars and their compositions (sand, lime, gravel, clays, salts, coal slag, etc.) , and the association of ceramic powder, steel slag, vegetable or animal residues (blood, fat, seeds, ashes, etc.) was found, looking for parameters of respect to the past and its knowledge, an act in the present and in the future. This study is made up of historical researches on the city of São Cristóvão and also laboratory experiments from the collection of samples in this Church, resulting in data that allow the determination of characteristics of plaster mortar and registration of this heritage, inventory on the characterization of mortars and old construction techniques in the historical buildings of State of Sergipe, as well as general data sources for other research that may be developed in the area of Preservation and Restoration Technology.
