La recesión gingival (RG) es una condición clínica caracterizada por la migración apical del margen gingival. Su incidencia varía desde el 8% en los niños hasta 100% luego de los 50 años de edad en la población general. La literatura reporta pocos estudios sobre prevalencia de RG en Venezuela destacando un vacío en el estado Mérida. Objetivo: Evaluar la prevalencia de RG en pacientes atendidos en la clínica de Periodoncia de la Facultad de Odontología de la Universidad de Los Andes (FOULA). Metodología: Investigación observacional descriptiva de corte transversal, de enfoque cuantitativo. Se evaluaron 1620 pacientes que acudieron a la clínica de Periodoncia de la FOULA en un periodo de 9 años (2009 – 2018). Los datos recopilados fueron reflejados en el instrumento diseñado para tal fin, para posteriormente ser aplicado el análisis de datos secundarios a través de tablas estadísticas de frecuencia. Resultados: Se observó prevalencia de RG de un 74,9% en el grupo en edades comprendidas entre 21 y 30 años (33,22%)en el género femenino (56,2%) predominando el tipo I según Miller (81,9%); los factores traumáticos representaron la etiología más prevalente (53,3%). Conclusiones: Se determinó alta prevalencia de RG en el género femenino en edades comprendidas entre 21 y 30 años en los pacientes atendidos en la clínica de Periodoncia de la FOULA durante el periodo 2009 – 2018.
