Desde hace unos diezaños, en varios países de América Latina, se ha venido presentando la tendenciaa establecer leyes sobre el recurso hídrico. Éste ha sido el caso reciente dePerú (2009), Ecuador (2010), Bolivia (2010) y Colombia (2005 y 2008), entreotros países. En algunos de estos casos se abre la posibilidad de establecerlos mercados de agua como una de las herramientas para gestionar el recurso, yen otros casos, como el colombiano, si bien no se establecen taxativamente,tampoco niega la posibilidad de que se puedan desarrollar.El presente artículocompila y estudia algunas de las experiencias más sobresalientes en laimplementación de mercados de agua a nivel internacional. A partir declasificar los casos estudiados en dos grupos (mercados formales e informales),se establecieron sus principales características al identificar cuáles son susprincipales fortalezas, debilidades y condiciones mínimas para su desempeñoadecuado. Se encontró que los mercados de agua son instrumentos para gestionarel recurso en entornos de escasez relativa, dada la creciente demanda delsector urbano y el deterioro de las fuentes. Su buen desempeño dependesignificativamente de la presencia de instituciones (reglas de juego) quelimiten la aparición de externalidades y disminuyan la posibilidad de posiblesconflictos distributivos.
