L.SPATIAL VARIABILITY OF HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY OF SATURATED SOIL USING TWO LABORATORY METHODS AND SAMPLES WITH DIFFERENTS VOLUMES 2 ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to characterize the spatial variability of saturated hydraulic conductivity (K0) using two laboratory methods and samples with different volumes in Oxisoil Distrocoeso located in the city of Cruz das Almas. Deformed structural samples were collected in two types of volumetric rings with 0.081 m long and 0.070 m in diameter (312 cm3) and 0.05 m in height and diameter (98 cm3). In the same sampling points of K0 deformed samples were collected for quantification of sand, silt, clay, total porosity, macro and microporosity, bulk density in a sample grid of 7 x 7 points spaced at 2.0 x 2.0 m totaling an area of 196.0 m². The results were submitted to exploratory statistical analysis and Shapiro-Wilk normality test; later, the spatial dependence was verified by geostatistical analysis. The results showed that for the depth of 0-0.15 m the hydraulic conductivity determined in the constant load permeameter in the higest volume cylinder showed a lower coefficient of variation, indicating a better representativeness of the samples; soil bulk density showed moderate spatial dependence index, with a range of 1.22 m and pherical-type semivariogram to the depth of 0-0.15m; to the depth of 0.15-0.30 the spatial dependence index was strong, reaching 1.54 m and exponential semivariogram. The determination of soil moisture is very important because it is the property with the most influence on the dielectric constant of the medium. Time-domain reflectometry (TDR) is an indirect technique used to estimate the water content of the soil (θ) based on its dielectric constant (Ka). Like any other technique, it has advantages and disadvantages. Among the major disadvantages is the need for calibration, which requires consideration of the soil characteristics. This study aimed to perform the calibration of a TDR100 device to estimate the volumetric water content of four horizons of a Yellow Argisol. Calibration was performed under laboratory conditions using disturbed soil samples contained in PVC columns. The three rods of the handcrafted probes were vertically installed in the soil columns. Weight measurements with digital scales and daily readings of the dielectric constant with the TDR device were taken. For all soil horizons evaluated, the best fits between the dielectric constant and the volumetric water content were related to the cubic polynomial model. The Ledieu model overestimated by approximately 68 % the volumetric water content in the A and AB horizons, and underestimating by 69 % in Bt2, in relation to volumetric water content obtained by gravimetry. The underestimation by linear, Topp, Roth, and Malicki models ranged from 50 % to 85 % for all horizons. Key words: Apparent dielectric constant. Soil water content. TDR calibration.

SOIL WATER BALANCE UNDER DENSE ORANGE 'PEAR' ORCHARD GRAFTED ONTO DIFFERENT ROOTSTOCKS 2 ABSTRACT Citrus orchards are mainly located in the coastal strip of Bahia State, where soils are represented by yellow Oxisols and Ultisols. Rootstocks that induce to the crown equivalent or higher production efficiency and that have lower crown volume may be as or more considered than those with higher crown volume and with higher fruit yield per plant. The objective was to characterize the water balance in the soil and evaluate the canopy-rootstock interactions. The work was carried out at Agropecuária Gavião in Inhambupe-BA, in an experimental area with sweet orange grafted onto seven different rootstocks: hybrids TSKC x (LCR x TR) -059, LVK x LCR-038, TSKC x CTSW-041; lemon 'Cravo Santa Cruz' (rangpur lime – citrus limonia Osbeck; 'Sunki Tropical' tangerine; Citrandarin Riverside; and Trifoliata Flying Dragon. Two experiments with larger plants (measuring approximately 2.5 m high) and conventional spacing (6.5 m x 3.0 m) were evaluated. It is concluded that during the one-year evaluation, the variation of the actual evapotranspiration (ET) of the orange crop from 1,270 mm up to 1,306 mm was observed, due to the rootstocks used in this research. For the periods of lowest and highest availability of water respectively, daily values varied from 0.95 to 8.63 mm. There is no significant difference in relation to ET data for the different rootstocks in dense plantation, when compared to ET data in conventional plantation.
