El aumento de microorganismos resistentes ante los agentes antimicrobianos es uno de los problemas que afectan a las ciencias odontológicas. El Enterococcus faecalis es una bacteria anaerobia facultativa y oportunista, considerada como la mayor causante de los fracasos endodónticos debido a sus múltiples características, tales como su capacidad para competir con otros microorganismos, invadir los túbulos dentinales, resistir medios poco nutritivos, e incluso resistir el pH alcalino (1). Se han realizado varios estudios de eficacia y eficiencia de diversos medios químicos de eliminación bacteriana durante el tratamiento de conducto, estos estudios establecen que el Enterococcus faecalis es sensible a varios irrigantes como al hipoclorito de sodio, gluconato de clorhexidina al 2 % (2-4), así como combinaciones de hidróxido de calcio con hipoclorito de sodio (5,6) y otros estudios con nuevas alternativas de eliminación bacteriana. Por otro lado, se encuentran las medicaciones convencionales intraconducto como el paramonoclorofenol, pasta de hidróxido de calcio, formocresol, pasta medicadas y asociaciones de medicamentosas para uso endodóntico, tales como el hidróxido de calcio con el omeprazol, paramonoclorofenol, yodoformo (7-9), además de nuevas alternativas de medicación como el propóleo. En la terapia endodóntica, el uso del medicamento intraconducto es importante si se desea obtener y mantener un tratamiento endodóntico exitoso, más aun, por la persistencia y resistencia del Enterococcus faecalis que, aunque siendo una bacteria en menor porcentaje en la cavidad oral, constituye una de las principales causas de fracasos endodónticos. Esto hace de esta bacteria altamente virulenta y muy complicada de eliminar.
El objetivo de esta revisión bibliográfica es actualizar las bases teóricas sobre la fisiología del gusto y su importancia en la detección temprana y oportuna de diversas enfermedades sistémicas, teniendo en cuenta la forma en que se expresan las células gustativas y su implicancia directa con enfermedades sistémicas o metabólicas como la diabetes mellitus, hipertensión, 2019-nCoV; esta información es de suma importancia en la actualización de la terapéutica médica-odontológica. Resultando fundamental para el cirujano dentista el desarrollo adecuado del interrogatorio y la aplicación de métodos de diagnóstico, además de entender el desarrollo del proceso del sentido del gusto. Para esta revisión, los datos utilizados se encuentran publicados en la base de datos de búsqueda y selección de PubMed, Google Scholar, Elsevier, Scielo y Web of Science y libros sobre el tema.
