La enfermedad por coronavirus 2019 puede ocasionar lesión renal aguda (LRA), una complicación frecuente según algunos estudios, principalmente en pacientes críticamente enfermos. Objetivo: Identificar la frecuencia de LRA en pacientes hospitalizados con COVID-19 moderada y severa. Métodos: El estudio fue retrospectivo descriptivo, con una muestra representativa, aleatorizada simple, totalizando 69 pacientes con edad de 30-80 años, con COVID-19 confirmada por reacción en cadena de la polimerasa en tiempo real, atendidos en el Hospital Militar Central de El Salvador, de abril a julio del 2020. El resultado principal cuantificable fue la frecuencia con que ocurrió elevación de la creatinina sérica en los pacientes con COVID-19 moderada y severa. El análisis lo realizó el mismo investigador. Resultados: La LRA en los pacientes hospitalizados con COVID-19 ocurrió en el 52% de los casos, donde la LRA estadio I fue más frecuente (24 vs. 19% estadio III y un 9% estadio II). En la COVID-19 moderada fue más frecuente el estadio I (9%) y II (6%). En la COVID-19 severa fue más frecuente el estadio I (16%) y III (14%). Conclusiones: La frecuencia de LRA en los pacientes con COVID-19 hospitalizados, alcanzó una incidencia de más de la mitad de los casos. En pacientes con COVID-19 moderada fue más
