El ritmo de vida hoy en día ha causado que los alimentos sean empaquetados, causando desechos por el envasado. Uno de los principales es el polietileno de alta densidad (PEAD). Por otro lado, la producción de los cereales, genera residuos, uno de ellos es la paja.
Con el objetivo de darle una alternativa a la disposición final a estos residuos, se sugirió su evaluación para su uso en materiales de construcción, utilizando la paja como reforzante y el PEAD como matriz. Las pruebas realizadas para paja y PEAD fueron; termogravimetría (TGA), calorimetría diferencial de barrido (DSC) y microscopía electrónica de barrido (MEB). Mediante TGA se obtuvieron las temperaturas de degradación, 200°C para la paja y superiores a 250°C para el PEAD. El DSC del PEAD mostró el punto de fusión a 140°C. Mediante DSC y TGA se logró establecer las temperaturas para la fabricación de materiales de construcción, las cuales oscilan entre 150-190°C, con ello se garantiza una buena interacción entre paja y PEAD. La MEB mostró para la paja una superficie porosa y rugosa, lo cual favorecerá la adhesión refuerzo-matriz.
