April 1895 der Priisident unserer Gesellschaft der Versammlung die Trauerbotscbaft von dem jiihen Hingang des langjiibrigen, hervorragenden Mitgliedes Lo t h a r M e y e r mittbeilte, gedacbte er in Worten voll Anerkennung der Wirksamkeit und der Bedeutung des dabingeiangenen grossen Forschers , zugleich ein rusfibrlicberes Lebensbild desselben aus der Feder eines langjiihrigen Schiilers und Freundes in Aussicht stellend.Dieses Versprechen suchen die nachstehendeo Blatter einzulhen; war der Verfasser such durch den Wechsel in seinen iiusseren Verbiiltnissen verhindert, sich der Arbeit mit der Ruhe und Musse zu widmen, wie dies in seinem Wunsche lag, so diirften die darin entbaltenen eachlichen Angaben I) doch zu einer Vervollstiindigung des Bildes vom Leben und Wirken des Dahingeschiedenen wesentlieh beitragen; die wissenschaftliche Bedeutung L o t h ar M e y er's bedsrf gegeniibcr der jetzt lebenden Generation einer eingehenden Begriindung n i c k J u l i u s L o t h a r M e y e r wurde geboren am 19. August 1830 zu Varel a. d. J a d e im Grossherzogthum Oldenburg ale Sohn dee dortigen Amtsphysikus Dr. F r i e d r i c b A u g u s t M e y e r und seiner Frau A n n a S o p h i e W i l b e l m i n e , geb.B i e r m a n n . Er war unter sieben Kindern das vierte, doch starben seine alteren Geschwister schon in zartem Alter. Auch L o t h a r war von Geburt an sehr schwachlich und vielfach durch die Einderkrankheitea heimgesucht, die durch die Bauera, welche mit ibren kranken Kindern in's Haus seines Vaters kamen, eingeschleppt wurden. Dazu kam das feuchte, rauhe Klima der Nordseekiiste; es bedurfte der ganzen aufopfernden Pflege und riihrenden Sorgfalt der Mutter, den kleinen L o t h a r am Leben zu erhalten, und zuweilen schien es, ale o b alle Miihe vergebeos sein sollte und die Hoffoung auf Erbaltung des jungen Lebens aufzugaben sei.
Einleitnng.Erst die von C a n n i z z a r o der Avogadro'schen Regel und dern Gesetz von D u 1 o n g und P e t i t gegebene Deutung hatte dieselben, unterstutzt durch M i t s c h e r l i c h ' s Beobachtungen uber den Isomorphismus, zu den wichtigen Hulfsmitteln fur die Bestimmung der relativen Massen der Atome und Molekeln werden lassen, mittelst welcher der bis dahin herrschenden Verwirrung und Willkur in der Wahl dieser Grofsen erfolgreich gesteuert werden konnte. Waren auch die genannten Gesetze noch nicht auf alle bekannten Elemente anwendbar, traten sogar einzelne unbestreitbare Ausnahmen von der Regel auf, welche den Glauben an diese selbst nicht unerheblich zu erschuttern drohten, so konnte doch fur die Mehrzahl der Elemente das Atomgewicht nach gleichmiifsigen Principien festgestellt werden. Die hierdurch fur die Atomgewichte der Elemente erhaltenen Zahlenwerthe liefsen die Beziehungen , welche unter ihnen herrschen und welche fur kleinere Gruppen von Elementen schon fruher bernerkt und von verschiedenen Forschern in verschiedenster Weise gedeutet worden waren, in grofserer Klarheit hervortreten.
