Bei fehlender Erfahrung lauteten die anfi~nglichen Mitteilungen fiber das Verhalten des Liquor cerebrospinalis bei der E. e., denen immer nut wenige F~lle zugrunde lagen, sehr widerspreehend. Wohl wurde yon vornherein beim Auftreten der Epidemie fiberall an die Liquoruntersuehung herangegangen, aber aus versehiedenen Grfinden nicht gleich systematisch und daher im ganzen mit geringem diagnostischen Nutzen. Einmal zeigte der Liquor vielfach keinerlei oder doch nur sehr geringgradige Ver~nderungen, denen kein differentialdiagnostischer Wert innezuwohnen schien ; andererseits wurden in der Regel gerade die]enigen Untersuchungsmethoden, mit denen sich gewisse ffir die E. e. typisehe Ver~nderungen feststellen lassen, noch nicht angewandt. So hatte die Liquoruntersuchung in erster Linie kaum praktischen Weft; es war mehr eine Untersuchung, die der Vollst~ndigkeit halber vorgenommen wurde. Erst mit den Arbeiten yon B~nard, Dopter, Roger sowie insbesondere yon A. •etter und seinen Mitarbeitern erhielt die Liquorforschung festere Grundlagen, auf denen sich weiterbauen lielL Da inzwischen abet die Epidemie vom Winter 1919/20 vorfibergegangen und jene yon 1920/21 viel weniger ausgebreitet war, konnten die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse allerdings nur noch in beschr~nktem Mal~e nutzbar gemacht werden. W~hrenddessen sind nun eine ganze Reihe weiterer Arbeiten-fibrigens ausschliei~lieh ausl~ndische-erschienen, die sich das Verhalten des Liquors bei der E. e. zum Vorwurf genommen haben. Si~mtliche Arbeiten aber haben den Nachteil, dal~ bei der Untersuchung des Liquors nicht systematisch aUe Methoden berficksichtigt wurden, mit denen sich naeh dem jetzigen Stande der Erfahrung die ffir die E. e. charakteristisehen Ver~nderungen naehweisen lassen, sondern dab der Liquor nur mit einzelnen Methoden untersueht wurde. ~[ur bei einem ganz kleinen Prozentsatz des Materials siud alle vier notwendigen Methoden-Zellz~hlung, Globulinuntersuchung, Goldreaktion, Zuckerbestim-K. Bei unserem Material wurde fast regel-maBig auf die sp~terhin als typisch erkannten Ver~nderungen bin untersucht, so daI~ uns 62 vollst~ndig untersuchte Punktate von 53 Fallen (40 akuten und 13 chronisehen bzw. abgelaufenen) zur Verfiigung stehen. Gestfitzt auf dieses eigens Material sowie auf die bisher vsrliegends Literatur soll eine-auch in der ausl~ndischen Literatur noeh fshlende-lJbersicht fiber den derzeitigen Stand unserer Kelmtnis von dem Verhalten des Liquors bei der E. e. gegeben werden.
