Ueber das Verhältnis des Cassius Dio zur Parthergeschichte des Flavius Arrianus.Des Flavius Arrianus 15 Bücher " Parthergeschichte * müßte, wären sie uns noch zugänglich, wohl auch der Historiker unserer Tage noch zu schätzen wissen. Wenn auch kein genialer Mensch und eigentlich auch kein guter Historiker, besaß der durch Bücher und Lebenszucht gut gebildete Bithynier doch eine kleine Summe schätzbarer Eigenschaften. Hellene von Geblüt, erkennt er klar die Punkte, in denen der Römer seine Landsleute übertrifft, vor allem Taktik, Strategie und Verwaltung: Gebiete, denen er sich ja selbst in römischen Diensten widmete, die ihn als Statthalter von Kappadokien dauernd hart an die Grenze des Partherreichs fesselten und ihn schon vorher in die Nähe Kaiser Hadrians brachten. Wichtiger noch ist sein bemerkenswerter Spürsinn für gute, ja beste Quellen, die gründlich zu verwerten er sich auch dann nicht scheut, wenn etwa modische Richtung und Laune solche zur Seite geschoben hatte. Die letzten Splitter des verlorenen Werks, von denen man eine Anzahl schon längst im Lexikon des Suidas vermutet, gelegentlich auch einzelne gehoben und besprochen hatte, zu sammeln unternahm vor fünf Jahren der holländische Gelehrte A. G. Roos (Studia Arrianea: Teubner 1912). In ausführlichem Bericht (Berliner philol. Wochenschrift 1913 Nr. 14) versuchte ich klarzulegen, auf welchen Linien und Punkten man dem umsichtigen Sammler und Kenner ruhig folgen, an welchen wenigen Stellen man anderer Ansicht sein könne.
