O cenário clínico e os dados obtidos do ventilador permitem ao clínico fornecer ventilação mecânica invasiva eficaz e segura através da manipulação das configurações do ventilador. O conhecimento dos conceitos básicos e da utilização prática da ventilação mecânica é indispensável para médicos que pretendem trabalhar nas áreas de emergência e medicina intensiva. Este capítulo tem por objetivo apresentar os conceitos básicos da ventilação mecânica e correlacionar com a mecânica ventilatória do paciente.
Pericardiocentese é um procedimento diagnóstico e terapêutico que deve ser conhecido por todo clínico, pois a aspiração de pequeno volume de líquido é capaz de salvar a vida do paciente. Pode ser realizada com rapidez e com um mínimo de material por um médico treinado. O derrame pericárdico e o tamponamento cardíaco representam um espectro da doença com grande variação na apresentação clínica. Embora todos os derrames pericárdicos significativos sejam de importância clínica, a drenagem de emergência é necessária apenas para pacientes com comprometimento hemodinâmico. Nesse trabalho, apresentamos as indicações, contraindicações, o material necessário, a localização da punção e as complicações desse procedimento que pode ser determinante para a vida do paciente.

A toracocentese consiste em um procedimento diagnóstico fundamental para pacientes com derrame pleural de causa desconhecida, através da correta interpretação da análise do líquido pleural. O líquido puncionado deve ser avaliado laboratorialmente e classificado. O transudato geralmente é devido a alterações no controle do fluido corporal, enquanto o exsudato é frequentemente causado por processo inflamatório ou maligno. Apesar de ser considerado um procedimento pouco invasivo, é fundamental que a toracocentese obedeça a uma técnica padronizada com a finalidade de aprimorar a chance de diagnóstico e minimizar riscos. Neste trabalho, apresentamos uma revisão anatômica e fisiológica sobre a formação do derrame pleural, bem como a técnica, os materiais necessários e as complicações da toracocentese.
