PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Solo mole, caracterização geotécnica, adensamento oedométrico, resistência ao cisalhamento não drenada, Rio Grande/RS ABSTRACT: Firstly it was realized a bibliografic review to identify probable sites with superficial soft soil in Rio Grande/RS. DPL tests carried out in the identified sites reduced the possibilities to two. At these two sites, undisturbed samples were taken with shelby tubes and were realized: geotechnical characterization, oedometric consolidation tests, undrained shear strength determination with different techniques (free fall cone test, mini vane and triaxial tests). The materials are fine soils with presence of granular material and shells. The granular material is probably originated from the geological formation process, which is highly influenced by the lagoon salinity in the sedimentation period. The presence of these granular materials gives high rates of excess porepressure dissipation to the soil. The undrained shear strength of the soil varied between 7.3 and 24.3 kPa. The soils behavior -inferred by the analysis of CD triaxial tests, oedometric consolidation and by the formulations of Bjerrum (1973), Mesri (1975) and Ladd et al., (1977 -is of a normally consolidated to slightly over consolidated soil for effective stresses of the order of those estimated for the field conditions.
