Ante a crise energética de 1970 e o apagão em 2001, o Brasil se viu diante da necessidade da busca pela diversificação de fontes renováveis de energia, uma vez que a maior parte do seu fornecimento é originada de hidrelétricas. Com a extensão e localização geográfica privilegiadas do país, é de extrema relevância considerar o Sol como fonte indispensável para a produção de energia elétrica, por meio das placas fotovoltaicas. Com a crescente adoção de soluções sustentáveis na área da arquitetura e urbanismo, principalmente a partir da década de 1990, com a Rio 92, foram criados os selos ambientais para certificação de edifícios, que levam em conta requisitos fundamentais para o projeto, a obra e o funcionamento das construções, entre elas a eficiência energética. O presente estudo investiga as soluções projetuais sustentáveis adotadas em dois estudos de caso, com base na categoria Energia e Atmosfera do selo LEED, analisando o Edifício Vera Cruz II, em São Paulo, a partir do funcionamento da miniusina fotovoltaica, instalada na cobertura do edifício, e a eficiência energética que a ela proporciona ao edifício, em relação ao Edifício Arquiteto Carlos Bratke, que não produz energia renovável in loco, e apresenta, da mesma forma, a certificação LEED na categoria Core & Shell Platinum, além do Selo PROCEL Edificações.
