We performed a series of deformation experiments on a monodisperse, hard-sphere colloidal glass while simultaneously following the 3D trajectories of roughly 50,000 individual particles with a confocal microscope. In each experiment, we deformed the glass in pure shear at a constant strain rate (1 − 5 × 10 −5 s −1 ) to maximum macroscopic strains (5 − 10%), then reversed the deformation at the same rate to return to zero macroscopic strain. We also measured 3D particle trajectories in an identically-prepared quiescent glass in which the macroscopic strain was always zero. We find that shear transformation zones exist and are active in both sheared and quiescent colloidal glasses, revealed by a distinctive four-fold signature in spatial autocorrelations of the local shear strain.With increasing shear, the population of local shear transformations develops more quickly than in a quiescent glass, and many of these transformations are irreversible. When the macroscopic strain is reversed, we observe partial elastic recovery, followed by plastic deformation of the opposite sign, required to compensate for the irreversibly transformed regions. The average diameter of the shear transformation zones at maximum strain is 2.3 particle diameters.
The present paper conceives 'organizing' as an indeterminate process taking place in the interstices of intra-acting elements, beyond visible/rational/intentional organizing. The term intraactivity refers to relationships between multiple elements (human and more-than-human) that are understood not to have clear or distinct boundaries. The paper aims at reframing organizing, as the effect of multiple intra-acting elements, by introducing the metaphor of shadow organizing. It offers examples as diverse as knowledge spillover, evidence-based medicine and improvisation, and the mafia's organizational rules. Design/methodology: The frame of reference is metaphorical theorization, based on the metaphor of shadow organizing, and is explored through three metonymies: the forest and its sheltered spaces in penumbra; the shadow as a grey zone between canonical and non-canonical practices; and secret societies, hidden in the shadow. The shadow is the symbol of what is 'betwixt and between.' Findings: Shadow organizing focuses on the way that situated elements (people, technologies, knowledges, infrastructures, society) intra-relate and acquire agency. Whilst organizing as the effect of intentional coordination, planning, and strategizing represents a well-established theorization, shadow organizing sheds light on what happen in the interstices of intentional and structured processes. The paper identifies the dimensions of shadow organizing as performativity, liminality, and secrecy. Value: The passage from elements in interaction to intra-acting relations that form elements is a challenge both for theory and methodology. The conductivity and structure of 8-mol%-yttria-stabilized zirconia with additions of nickel oxide has been investigated, both in the as-prepared state and after reduction of NiO in hydrogen. During reduction at 1000°C, the conductivity decreases by 40%-50% and most of the NiO dissolved in the zirconia is exsolved in the form of nickel particles. This is accompanied by the formation of tetragonal zirconia precipitates of size 10 -40 nm and by an increase in the lattice parameter. On reoxidation in air at 1000°C, the change in lattice parameter is partly reversed, but the conductivity shows no further changes.
Volunteer characteristics and volunteer rates across several laboratory experiments of sexual arousal were compared. Conditions were created to assess which component of the experimental setting was responsible for low volunteer rates in experiments using genital measurement. Subjects were 324 male and 424 female undergraduate students who had volunteered for an experiment on sexuality and personality. After completing several measures of sexual experience and attitude, subjects received a written description of one of the following conditions and were asked if they wished to volunteer: sexual film, sexual film and subjective rating of arousal, sexual film and assessment through forehead temperature, sexual film and assessment with a device that was placed over the clothes and measured genital heat flow, sexual film and assessment with the heat flow device while partially undressed, or sexual film and assessment with the vaginal photoplethysmograph or penile strain gauge while partially undressed. Men were significantly more likely to volunteer than women, and volunteer rates for both men and women decreased significantly when and only when subjects were required to undress. Multivariate analyses of variance revealed that both male and female volunteers were more sexually experienced, reported more exposure to erotic materials, and worried less about their sexual performance than nonvolunteers. No differences in volunteer characteristics occurred across the increasingly intrusive conditions for women while a few differences occurred for men. The present findings suggest that researchers should be cautious about discussing the generality of findings of studies involving exposure to a sexually explicit film alone as well as of experiments that involve self-report or physiological measures of sexual arousal.
