Control of specific protein synthesis by juvenile hormone during sexual maturation and reproduction is being studied in t h e left colleterial gland of t h e cockroach Periplaneta arnericana. Rates of specific oothecin synthesis and oothecin mRNA concentrations have been measured during sexual maturation and t h e effects of allatectomy and administration of juvenile hormone determined. The heterogeneity of t h e oothecins has been characterized and found t o b e d u e probably t o a multiplicity of structural genes. The complete primary structure of t h e major oothecin has been deduced from t h e sequences of cloned cDNAS. It can b e divided into a central region and two flanking arms that share sequence features. The structures of t h e oothecins show strong homologies with t h e silkmoth chorion proteins.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
