In this study, we evaluated the effects of an asthma education intervention, guided by social cognitive theory, on knowledge, intention, behavior, self-efficacy, and self-consciousness. The sample consisted of 87 asthmatic adolescents in six middle and/or high schools in California. A non-equivalent comparison group design, with delayed intervention in the comparison group, was utilized. We implemented a modified version of the American Lung Association’s Kickin Asthma curriculum. Self-report questionnaires assessing the key study variables were administered at baseline, at immediate postintervention, and five weeks after the intervention. There were no statistically significant differences at post-test, controlling for pre-test values, for any of the study variables between the intervention (n = 51) and comparison groups (n = 35). After collapsing across groups, however, there were statistically significant improvements following the intervention for knowledge, intention, selected behavior variables, and self-efficacy. The evaluation of this theory-based asthma education intervention demonstrates the positive impact this curriculum can have on a sample of asthmatic adolescents.
This article examines the published literature on religion, age, and health, and how these variables relate to job satisfaction and working into advanced ages. This review summarizes findings from the following databases: EBSCOhost; Web of Science; PubMed; and Google Scholar. Search terms included various forms of "aging/elderly worker or workforce, workplace religiosity, religion/spirituality and health, and religious coping." Ninety-two articles employing a variety of methods were reviewed in detail. If plausible links between religious coping methods and working past age 67 can be posited, then a future study of potential predictive capabilities may be warranted.
Undergraduate research is defined as an inquiry or investigation conducted by an undergraduate student in collaboration with a faculty member that makes an intellectual or creative contribution to the discipline. This study assessed the impact of integrating undergraduate research experiences into public health curricula on students’ knowledge of neighborhood inequalities, perception of research, and motivation to talk about health issues. The sample consisted of 132 undergraduate students from two groups (intervention and comparison). The intervention group ( n = 71) conducted a structured social observation in various zip codes to characterize assets and liabilities of the local built environment. Self-reported questionnaires assessing the key study variables were administered to the students at baseline and at postintervention. Compared with those in the comparison group, improvements were noted in knowledge among those in the intervention group from pretest to posttest. Participants in the intervention group were also more motivated to talk about health issues compared with those in the comparison group. Perception of research among those in the intervention group also improved over time when participants were divided into two research confidence level groups (confident and nonconfident). The evaluation of this intervention demonstrates the positive impact integrating undergraduate research experiences can have on a sample of students.
Background and Purpose: College drinking is a major public health concern with four out of every five college students reporting alcohol use. The authors examined the frequency with which students utilized 11 protective alcohol use behaviors from the 2011 American College Health Association – National College Health Assessment (ACHA – NCHA – II). The effects of age, gender, and year in school on each of these behaviors were also examined. Methods: A total of 1,082 randomly selected students attending a California State University institution completed a web-based version of the NCHA-II. Descriptive statistics were conducted to describe the sample and the protective behaviors. Logistic regression analysis were conducted to assess the associations between each behavior with age, gender, and year in school. Results: The most frequently utilized behavior was staying with the same friends. Compared to undergraduate students, graduate students were more likely to utilize protective behaviors, and males were more likely than females to utilize the majority of these behaviors. Conclusions: This study provides support for the implementation of alcohol-related interventions in different sectors of the university, such as dormitories and fraternities.
