A determinação de áreas para a disposição de resíduos sólidos urbanos prevê a existência de um subsolo com baixa permeabilidade hidráulica para a contenção de fluídos provenientes do lixo, principalmente o chorume. Os ensaios diretos para a determinação da condutividade hidráulica do solo amostram pontualmente e podem não representar efetivamente o comportamento do meio. O uso de métodos geofísicos na determinação de características físicas do meio auxilia na elaboração de melhores modelos espaciais das camadas do subsolo. Este trabalho descreve os procedimentos de campo e apresenta os resultados de radar de penetração no solo (ground penetrating radar -GPR) realizados na área de descarte de resíduos sólidos do município de Pirenópolis, Goiás. As investigações geofísicas objetivam a determinação de áreas impróprias para a disposição de resíduos sólidos, estimativa da espessura e composição do solo, localização de áreas com possível percolação de chorume, e determinação da profundidade do topo rochoso. O registro dos dados de GPR ocorreu com o sistema SIR3000, acoplado a uma antena blindada de 200 MHz, no interior e nos arredores do lixão. Com as seções de GPR identificaram-se padrões de reflexão típicos de solos, rochas, resíduos sólidos urbanos e materiais percolados por chorume. As investigações com o GPR mostram solos arenosos na região com espessuras entre 0,2 a 9 metros, o topo das rochas, foliações, e estruturas deformacionais (dobras e falhas). Os resultados confirmam que, apesar do local ser impróprio para a disposição de resíduos, o chorume não ultrapassa os limites do Lixão de Pirenópolis dentro da profundidade de investigação do GPR.
