Introduction. Functional efficiency is a product of various deficits, regardless of the diseases that cause them and other factors. The assessment of the functioning status allows for focusing of activities on diagnostic and therapeutic ones and is a platform for agreement between the parties involved in geriatric care. Aim. The aim of the study was to assess the functional efficiency of geriatric patients under long-term care. Material and method. The research was carried out in a group of 518 elderly people receiving long-term care. The age of the respondents was in the range of 65-92 years old. The research was carried out using the NOSGER scale (Nurses’ Observation Scale for Geriatric Patients). This scale allows to quickly and easily assess the psychological, mental and social condition of the patient. Results. When assessing with the NOSGER scale, the average result was 80.64 points. Among the component areas, the largest deficits were reported in the field of instrumental activities of everyday life (mean 17.41 points), and the best score was in the area of disruptive behaviors (mean 8.67 points). Conclusions. The studied group of geriatric patients was characterized by a reduced level of functional fitness. The greatest deficits were found in the basic activities of everyday life. Education significantly differentiated the functional efficiency of the surveyed seniors.
Introduction. The concept of life satisfaction means a multi-factorial assessment, which is based mainly on such two premises as: satisfaction with experienced years and satisfaction with the present life. When examining the satisfaction of a person’s life, certain aspects of existence, on the basis of which the individual makes the assessment based on individual criteria, are analyzed.Aim. The aim of the study was to assess the life satisfaction of elderly patients hospitalized in neurological wards.Material and Methods. The research was carried out in hospitals in the city of Lublin, in the departments of neurology. The study involved 102 older people. The youngest respondent was 65 and the oldest was 90 (average age 74.36±6.78). The research was carried out using the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS).Results. The average result in the Satisfaction with Life Scale which the respondents obtained was 16.27±5.00. After converting the result into stens, 54.9% of respondents obtained low results (stens 1–4). 39.2% obtained average results (stens 5–6), and 5.9% high scores (stens 7–10).Conclusions. Self-evaluation of the life satisfaction of older patients in neurological wards was at a low level. The assessment of satisfaction with life significantly differentiated such variables as: sex, marital status, education, the fact of who the respondent lives with, and the place of residence. Introduction.Quality of life and old age are closely related. Aging is perceived as a destructive, progressive, and irreversible process. This process is caused by biological factors related to physical involution as well as psychosocial factors. Elderly people have difficulties related to deteriorating health. Aim. The study aims to determine the quality of life of elderly people with neurological disorders. Material and Methods. The research was conducted in the Lublin Voivodeship, in a group of 111 elderly people diagnosed with neurological diseases. 51.35% of participants were female. The age of the respondents was in the range of 65-95 years. A standardized questionnaire: the WHOQOL-BREF constituted the research tool. Results. In the examined group of patients, the general quality of life was assessed at an average level of 3.11 ± 1.12, and the assessment of health at the level of 2.81 ± 1.00. The respondents rated the highest the environmental domain (57.05 ± 16.23). The social relationship domain was at an average level; 54.00 ± 24.08, while the psychological one was 46.38 ± 13.16. The physical health domain received the lowest scores (44.53 ± 12.42). Conclusions. The self-evaluation of the quality of life completed by elderly people with neurological disorders was at a low level. Marital status differentiated the quality of life in the social domain. The residence of the studied seniors influenced the assessment of their overall quality of life. (JNNN 2019;8(1):11-15) Key Words: quality of life, neurological disorders, elderly people Streszczenie Wstęp. Materiał i metody. ( PNN 2019;8(1):11-15...
Introduction. Functional efficiency of the elderly can be defined as the ability to perform ordinary daily life tasks safely and independently. Aim. The research aims at determining the functional efficiency of elderly patients hospitalized in neurological departments. Material and Methods. The study was performed in 113 elderly patients hospitalized in neurological departments of hospitals in the city of Lublin. The research material was collected using two standardized tools: the Barthel index and the Katz index (ADL). Results. When evaluating patients with the Barthel index, 38.00% of patients were assigned to category I; 52.20% to category II and 9.80% to category III. In the ADL scale, 68.10% of the respondents were fully functioning, 12.40% were moderately functioning, and 19.50% were disabled. Conclusions. The study group of elderly patients in neurological departments exhibited moderate functional impairment. Age significantly differentiated the functional abilities of the research group. Education influenced the degree of independence in neurological patients. (JNNN 2017;6(3):102-106)
