The plant family Orobanchaceae includes many parasitic weeds that are also impressive invaders and aggressive crop pests with several specialized features (e.g. microscopic seeds, parasitic habits). Although they have provoked several large-scale eradication and control efforts, no global evaluation of their invasive potential is as yet available. We use tools from ecological niche modeling in combination with occurrence records from herbarium specimens to evaluate the global invasive potential of each of 10 species in this assemblage, representing several of the worst global invaders. The invasive potential of these species is considerable, with all tropical and subtropical countries, and most temperate countries, vulnerable to invasions by one or more of them.

Global climate change and invasions by nonnative species rank among the top concerns for agents of biological loss in coming decades. Although each of these themes has seen considerable attention in the modeling and forecasting communities, their joint effects remain little explored and poorly understood. We developed ecological niche models for 1804 species from the European flora, which we projected globally to identify areas of potential distribution, both at present and across 4 scenarios of future (2055) climates. As expected from previous studies, projections based on the CGCM1 climate model were more extreme than those based on the HadCM3 model, and projections based on the a2 emissions scenario were more extreme than those based on the b2 emissions scenario. However, less expected were the highly nonlinear and contrasting projected changes in distributional areas among continents: increases in distributional potential in Europe often corresponded with decreases on other continents, and species seeing expanding potential on one continent often saw contracting potential on others. In conclusion, global climate change will have complex effects on invasive potential of plant species. The shifts and changes identified in this study suggest strongly that biological communities will see dramatic reorganizations in coming decades owing to shifting invasive potential by nonnative species.

Striga hermonthica, a root hemiparasitic Orobanchaceae, severely constrains grain production in subSaharan Africa. Host specificity and geography may play important roles in shaping the population structure of S. hermonthica, with the Rift Valley potentially presenting a significant barrier to dispersal. Genetic diversity was assessed in 12 S. hermonthica populations from locations in Ethiopia. Of these, seven populations were parasitic on sorghum, two each on tef and maize, and one on finger millet. Genetic variation was detected using four amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) primer combinations. After correcting for repeatability, 385 fragments were detected across all primer combinations. The percentage of polymorphic loci was relatively high, ranging from 53.2% to 76.4%. Expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.168 to 0.279. Genetic differentiation between populations was relatively high, and all populations were significantly different from each other. F ST values ranged from 0.032 to 0.293 and averaged 0.146. Genetic differences between populations could not be attributed to host specificity. Instead, geography was the main determinant of population structure. There was a correlation between geographic and genetic distance. A significant portion of the genetic variance could be apportioned on either side of the Rift Valley (5%; P ¼ 0:001). Also, a significant geographic barrier was identified in the southern portion of the sampled region.

The current knowledge of genetic diversity of Striga asiatica, S. hermonthica, and S. gesnerioides is reviewed. The genetic variability of these species has not been sufficiently evaluated relative to their wide distributions. Genetic diversity is a result of hybridization, clinal variation, local adaptation, and frequent colonization events. Colonization events of autogamous species formed genetically uniform populations. There is a general correlation between geographic distance and genetic distance and evidence of host specific Striga populations. The genetic diversity inherent in Striga is extremely important for modeling its future dispersal in light of global climate change. Under present day climate conditions, ecological niche models predict Striga species as serious agronomic threats to tropical and subtropical regions including the Western Hemisphere. Future climate change scenarios may result in an overall reduction in spread of Striga species in tropical and subtropical habitats with modest expansion in temperate regions.
