Cet article prend appui sur une recherche doctorale qui porte sur l’usage de la formule «former l’esprit critique» (Eduscol, 2016) dans les discours institutionnels en contexte français. Il ambitionne d’interroger les modalités de construction de l’autorité dans ces discours. En quoi l’usage de cet objet de discours qu’est la formule contribue-t-il à construire puis à forger la légitimité des discours institutionnels? Une analyse qualitative d’un corpus de plus de trois cents textes institutionnels français met au jour les stratégies rhétoriques et discursives des locuteurs qui participent de la construction d’un ethos d’autorité. Après avoir circonscrit l’objet «discours institutionnels» et précisé la méthodologie d’analyse du corpus, les signes inscrits dans la matérialité des textes institutionnels seront mis en exergue ainsi que les manifestations de l’autorité qui émanent de l’usage en discours de la formule. Une autorité qui repose également sur la fonction du locuteur, de celui qui porte la parole au nom de l’institution et incarne, à ce titre, son autorité et sa légitimité.
Parue dans la collection « Communication, médias et sociétés » dirigée par Bernard Miège, Pierre Moeglin et Isabelle Pailliart, cette synthèse argumentée et critique organisée en six chapitres propose des points de repères et soulève les enjeux liés à l'ancrage des techniques numériques dans les sociétés contemporaines. En privilégiant à la fois une « théorisation à moyenne portée » et la « modélisation » des évolutions et transformations observées, l'auteur y révèle les procès pluriels et complexes, engagés de longue date, à l'oeuvre dans le processus de numérisation des sociétés.
L’étude se situe dans la sphère discursive de l’institution scolaire française. Elle a pour cadre l’éducation aux médias et à l’information (ÉMI). Une analyse quantitative (en termes de fréquences et de cooccurrences) et qualitative (en termes de corrélations) d’un corpus de textes institutionnels focalise sur la mobilisation puis l’usage de la formule esprit critique. Ses corrélations lexicales avec les notions de maîtrise de l’environnement, de jugement et d’engagement seront ensuite étudiées. L’ÉMI sert en effet de cadre émancipateur au développement d’une attitude critique (Foucault, 1978) aux finalités libératrices. La capacité à penser par soi-même demeurant une condition au développement du pouvoir d’agir. Des tensions sont toutefois perceptibles notamment entre les finalités de l’ÉMI, la puissance émancipatrice de l’esprit critique et les contraintes liées à l’ordre scolaire.
