A method is discussed and demonstrated which enables the magnetic or gravity profile of a two‐dimensional geologic structure section to be determined by a relatively small digital computer. This method has no restrictions with regard to inclination of the field, remanent magnetization, or complexity of the section. Its chief use is as an objective means of verifying, theoretically, the structural validity of a geologic section, interpreted from a magnetic or gravity profile.
The results of an 8o3-mile (1300 km) airborne magnetometer profile flown across Tunisia and Algeria, from Tunis to the coast west of Oran, across north-western Spanish Morocco and Tangier, and across south central Portugal to Lisbon are presented. The general geology of the zone over which the profile was flown is shown with the magnetic variations.Depth, structural and rock type interpretations have been made from the magnetic control. The depth values are believed to be high due to angle of the flight line with respect to the probable maximum gradient of the magnetic anomalies. However, depth values are given in all of the basins of possible interest.
An interpretation is given of an airborne magnetometer profile from Singapore to Labuan, North Borneo, coupled with a gravity profile which partially covered the same path. The interpretation indicates a shallow basement along the western half of the profile, except for a minor sedimentary basin about 50 miles west of the Tambelan Islands, and another minor sedimentary basin in western Borneo. East of Kuching, Sarawak, the geophysical profiles apparently impinge on a major basin, with sedimentary thickness of the order of 10,000 ft.
