Abstract-Big data is a broad term with numerous dimensions, most notably: big data characteristics, techniques, software systems, application domains, computing platforms, and big data milieu (industry, government, and academia). In this paper we briefly introduce fundamental big data characteristics and then present seven case studies of big data techniques, systems, applications, and platforms, as seen from academic perspective (industry and government perspectives are not subject of this publication). While we feel that it is difficult, if at all possible, to encapsulate all of the important big data dimensions in a strict and uniform, yet comprehendible language, we believe that a set of diverse case studies -like the one that is offered in this paper -a set that spreads over the principal big data dimensions can indeed be beneficial to the broad big data community by helping experts in one realm to better understand currents trends in the other realms.
In the present paper we would like to share our technology enhanced, interactive and student centric approach applied during our long-lived experience in teaching mathematics and informatics in higher education institutions. Our goal is to develop active-engagement student-centered environment instead of the traditional instructor-centered environment. Our teaching is based on cooperative learning, flipped learning, guided discovery, laboratory approach, simulations and investigations. It is oriented to the application of modern technologies and involves research elements.
The main purpose of this article is to describe the importance and the challenges of digital health literacy as recognized during the COVID-19 pandemic. First, basic definitions of health literacy and digital health literacy are provided, followed by, and matched against digital competence frameworks, and health literacy skills content and scales. Based on that, a compatibility analysis is provided, against the expectations for satisfactory levels definition for the respective competences and skills. For the approbation of the approach, results received from the participation of computing students at the Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski in the COVID-19 Health Literacy Survey are used.
