A comprehensive taxonomic revision of the genus Pogostemon in Southern Western Ghats was carried out based on field observation and extensive herbarium studies. Twenty-one species and one variety are recognized, among of which seven species and one variety are endemic to Western Ghats especially Nilgiris. Based on the observations made, a Checklist of the genus Pogostemon with a brief description for identification, season of flowering, endemism, ecology and distribution of each species in the Southern Western Ghats is formed.
Vandellia diffusa is reported for the first time from Asia. Its description, photographs, notes on distribution and habitat are provided for easy identification.
A new species, Anisochilus propecephalus (Lamiaceae) from Kanyakumari, Western Ghats, India is described and illustrated here. This new species is similar to Anisochilus carnosus in vegetative characters and inflorescence nature whereas in floral characters it is close to Anisochilus paniculatus, but differs from both by its decumbent habit, leaf size and shape, short petiole, inflorescence nature, size and shape of spike head, corolla size and shape and densely villous calyx. Detailed description, photographs, illustrations, IUCN red list category, distribution map, notes on biogeography and other relevant notes are provided.
