Karina Kuschnir est titulaire d'une maîtrise et d'un doctorat en anthropologie du Museu Nacional, université fédérale de Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) au Brésil. Elle est professeure associée au département d'anthropologie culturelle de l'IFCS/UFRJ, où elle coordonne le laboratoire d'anthropologie urbaine. Elle développe actuellement le projet « Dessins ethnographiques : explorations sur les techniques d'enregistrement et de recherche en anthropologie ». Karina Kuschnir : Mon rapport académique au dessin a débuté par un échec ! Mon rêve était de faire l'école de dessin industriel de l'UERJ 1 , mais j'ai échoué deux fois à l'examen de compétence spécifique. C'était très frustrant de ne pas avoir réussi justement le test pratique destiné à mesurer mes capacités pour le dessin d'observation. Comme prix de consolation, je me suis inscrite à la faculté de dessin industriel de la PUC 2 -Rio, mais j'ai été déçue par les cours. J'ai fini par changer et faire des études de journalisme, dans la même université. Là, j'ai eu la chance d'avoir plusieurs professeurs dans les domaines de l'histoire, de la sociologie et de l'anthropologie. C'est grâce à eux que j'ai réalisé à quel point je m'identifiais aux sciences sociales. En 1990, j'ai été admise en master et, en 1994, en doctorat en anthropologie sociale au musée national de l'UFRJ. J'ai approfondi mes études dans les domaines de l'anthropologie urbaine et de l'anthropologie politique, en oubliant complètement le dessin, à la fois professionnellement et dans la pratique quotidienne.L'élément-clé qui m'a fait revenir vers la pratique du dessin a été la naissance de mon fils Antonio en 2001. Ao reconstituir, com base em diversas fontes documentais (inclusive inéditas, ao que consta), a longa relação de camaradagem entre Antonio Candido e Sérgio Buarque de Holanda, discorre--se, no presente artigo, sobre o papel daquele crítico literário para a ulterior afirmação de Raízes do Brasil no cenário das ideias brasileiras. Conclui-se que a amizade entre ambos os intelectuais foi decisiva para a sagração desse livro – e, decerto, a de seu autor – como clássico da literatura nacional não ficcional.
