With several methods, a large number of liquid crystalline compounds were obtained, which contained a cyclohexane fragment with a lateral methyl substituent. IJovel mesogena were studied for chemical, physioochemical, and mesomorphic properties.

ChemInform Abstract The 2,6-disubstituted imidazothiadiazoles (IIIa)-(IIId), which bear no substituent at C-5, generally form smectic mesophases over a wide range of temperature. The 5-alkyl, 5-bromo or 5-cyano substituted title compounds (IIIe), (IV) or (V) display nematic properties and a marked change of their spectral characteristics as compared to their 5-unsubstituted analogues (IIIa)-(IIId). The bromination of these compounds (IIIa)-(IIId) is markedly influenced by the p-substituent of the neighboring 6-aryl group. The preparation of the derivatives (III) is carried out by a known procedure (no yields are given for the compounds (III) and (IV)).
