breeding, transgenic and cisgenic approaches have been discussed. This would help us to understand host defenses against Fusarium oxysporum and to formulate strategies to develop tolerant cultivars.

The newly identified SSRs would be useful in genetic diversity studies, finger-printing, and mapping. Loci from five related species, M. odorata, M. anadamanica, M. zeylanica, M. camptosperma, and M. griffithii, were successfully amplified using these SSR primers, showing their potential utility across species.

Tomato line IIHR-249-1 can be used for improving antioxidant capacity, total carotenoids and lycopene in tomato breeding programmes. Cherry tomato lines IIHR-2866, 2865 and 2864 can be used for improving β-carotene content. LA-1777 and interspecific hybrids could be used for developing tomato lines rich in antioxidants as well as TSS.

Mango (Mangiferaindica L.) fruits are generally classified based on peel color into green, yellow, and red types. Mango peel turns from green to yellow or red or retain green colors during ripening. The carotenoids and anthocyanins are the important pigments responsible for the colors of fruits. In the present study, peels of different colored cultivars at three ripening stages were characterized for pigments, colors, and gene expression analysis. The yellow colored cultivar "Arka Anmol" showed higher carotenoid content, wherein β-carotene followed by violaxanthin were the major carotenoid compounds that increased during ripening. The red colored cultivars were characterized with higher anthocyanins with cyanidin-3-O-monoglucosides and peonidin-3-O-glucosides as the major anthocyanins. The gene expression analysis by qRT-PCR showed the higher expression of carotenoid biosynthetic genes viz. lycopene-β-cyclase and violaxanthin-de-epoxidase in yellow colored cv. Arka Anmol, and the expression was found to increase during ripening. However, in red colored cv. "Janardhan Pasand," there is increased regulation of all anthocyanin biosynthetic genes including transcription factors MYB and basic helix loop. This indicated the regulation of the anthocyanins by these genes in red mango peel. The results showed that the accumulation pattern of particular pigments and higher expression of specific biosynthetic genes in mango peel impart different colors.

Endophytes, both of bacterial and fungal origin, are ubiquitously present in all plants. While their origin and evolution are enigmatic, there is burgeoning literature on their role in promoting growth and stress responses in their hosts. We demonstrate that a salt-tolerant endophyte isolated from salt-adapted Pokkali rice, a Fusarium sp., colonizes the salt-sensitive rice variety IR-64, promotes its growth under salt stress and confers salinity stress tolerance to its host. Physiological parameters, such as assimilation rate and chlorophyll stability index were higher in the colonized plants. Comparative transcriptome analysis revealed 1348 up-regulated and 1078 down-regulated genes in plants colonized by the endophyte. Analysis of the regulated genes by MapMan and interaction network programs showed that they are involved in both abiotic and biotic stress tolerance, and code for proteins involved in signal perception (leucine-rich repeat proteins, receptor-like kinases) and transduction (ca 2+ and calmodulin-binding proteins), transcription factors, secondary metabolism and oxidative stress scavenging. For nine genes, the data were validated by qPCR analysis in both roots and shoots. Taken together, these results show that salt-adapted Pokkali rice varieties are powerful sources for the identification of novel endophytes, which can be used to confer salinity tolerance to agriculturally important, but salt-sensitive rice varieties. Salinity stress is one of the most devastating abiotic stresses that affect growth, development and productivity of major crops. A soil is termed saline if its osmotic pressure is approximately 0.2 M Pa with an electrical conductivity of 4 dS/m or more (equivalent to ~40 mM NaCl) 1,2. It is estimated that at least 50% of the arable land worldwide will be salt affected by the year 2050 and this is expected to further increase due to global climate change 3. Rice (Oryza sativa L.), a major staple food crop, is one of the most salt-sensitive cereals 4. In the Indo-Gangetic Basin in India, an estimated 45% loss in rice production was attributed to salinity stress alone 5,6. The responses of plants to salinity stress are often multi-faceted and complex. In the initial phase, salinity stress manifests itself as osmotic stress with reduction in water uptake by plants. This triggers a range of metabolic and molecular cascades such as inhibition of cell expansion, stomatal conductance, photosynthetic activity, abscisic acid (ABA)-mediated responses followed by stimulation of the SOD and peroxidase activities as well as accumulation of osmolytes like proline. Mango (Mangifera indica L.) is known as the 'king of fruits' for its rich taste, flavor, color, production volume and diverse end usage. It belongs to plant family Anacardiaceae and has a small genome size of 439 Mb (2n = 40). Ancient literature indicates origin of cultivated mango in India. Although wild species of genus Mangifera are distributed throughout South and South-East Asia, recovery of Paleocene mango leaf fossils near Damalgiri, West Garo Hills, Meghalaya point to the origin of genus in peninsular India before joining of the Indian and Asian continental plates. India produces more than fifty percent of the world's mango and grows more than thousand varieties. Despite its huge economic significance genomic resources for mango are limited and genetics of useful horticultural traits are poorly understood. Here we present a brief account of our recent efforts to generate genomic resources for mango and its use in the analysis of genetic diversity and population structure of mango cultivars. Sequencing of leaf RNA from mango cultivars 'Neelam', 'Dashehari' and their hybrid 'Amrapali' revealed substantially higher level of heterozygosity in 'Amrapali' over its parents and helped develop genic simple sequence repeat (SSR) and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. Sequencing of double digested restriction-site-associated genomic DNA (ddRAD) of 84 diverse mango cultivars identified 1.67 million high quality SNPs and two major sub-populations. We have assembled 323 Mb of the highly heterozygous 'Amrapali' genome using long sequence reads of PacBio single molecule real time (SMRT) sequencing chemistry and predicted 43,247 protein coding genes. We identified in the mango genome 122,332 SSR loci and developed 8,451 Type1 SSR and 835 HSSR markers for high level of polymorphism. Among the published genomes, mango showed highest similarity with sweet orange (Citrus sinensis). These genomic resources will fast track the mango varietal improvement for high productivity, disease resistance and superior end use quality.
