A survey is given of recent results on the properties of pure water and binary and ternary mixtures at high temperatures and high pressures with emphasis on the geochemically important systems H 2 0 -CO 2 , H 2 0 -NaCl, and H 2 0 -CO 2 -NaC!. Among the properties discussed are phase diagrams, PVTx data, thermodynamic and transport properties, dielectric constant, electrical conductivity, and ionic equilibria. Concepts for predictive calculations of thermodynamic properties are briefly described. At about 200 kbar the melting temperature reaches 700 K.
PVTdata for pure water have been measured between 20°C and 600°C for pressures between 100 and 4O00 bar using an internally heated pressure vessel. The accuracy of the measured specific volumes is 0.2 percent or better. The volume isotherms were fitted by the Tait equation with an average absolute deviation of the experimental points from the smoothed curves of 0.02% below and of 0.05% above 200°C.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
