Plans are presented for conducting a field test of drill pipe corrosion, comparing air and nitrogen as drilling fluids. This test will provide data for evaluating the potential of reducing geothermal well drilling costs by extending drill pipe life and reducing corrosion control costs. Union Geothermal Company of New Mexico, a subsidiary of Union Oil Company of California, is participating by providing the drill rig, the well, and other support. Sandia National Laboratories is providing the nitrogen, recording the data, and assessing the results. The 10-day test will take place during fall 1980 at the Baca Location in Sandoval County, New Mexico.
