L The Reactions of Lignosulphonate Model Compounds with Diazonium Salts SummaryThe reactions of suitable lignosulphonate model compounds with benzenediazoniumbisulphate, p -nitrobenzenediazoniumbisulphate and 4,4'-bis-(biphenyl)diazoniumbisulphate were investigated. It was found that, under Optimum reaction conditions, a guaiacyl lignosulphonate model reacted with these diazonium salts in high yield. A syringyl lignosulphonate model, also representative of guaiacyl units with a blocked ori/io-position, gave inconclusive results. Its unsulphonated equivalent, having either a benzylic hydroxy or ether substituent, reacted smoothly with side-chain displacement Non-phenolic models were unreactive. It was also shown that the reactivity of lignosulphonate towards diazonium coupling should be increased by prior base treatment. Radical coupling, with loss of nitrogen, does not occur with the water soluble lignosulphonate models. Ether formation between diazonium salts and the aliphatic hydroxy groups of lignosulphonate, also involving nitrogen loss, was shown to be feasible although highly unlikely. Vernetzungsreaktionen der Ligninsulfonsäure. L Mitt.

The Crosslinking of Diazotised Lignosulphonate -A Model Study SummaryThe introduction of diazo groups into lignosulphonate model compounds by nitration, reduction and diazotisation was investigated. Non-phenolic model compounds were successfully diazotised and coupled with phenol, while phenolic model compounds were oxidatively degräded during the nitration step. Auto coupling of a diazotised model compound with the corresponding phenol formed by its reaction with water was also demonstrated. Direct diazotisation proved to be unsuccessful.

The Reactions of Lignosulphonate and Lignosulphonate Model Compounds with Acid Chlorides SummaryThe aryl acid Chlorides benzoyl Chloride, p-nitrobenzoyl Chloride and terephthaloyl Chloride were reacted with five lignosulphonate model compounds and two lignosulphonates. From the model reactions, carried out in aqueous base, optimised conditions for the reactions of both aliphatic and phenolic hydroxyl groups were established. Aliphatic hydroxyl groups gave considerably lower yields than phenolic hydroxyl groups. Consequently the Optimum reaction conditions for phenolic hydroxyl groups were used in the investigation of the reaction of both a spruce and a wattle lignosulphonate. The incorporation of benzoyl Chloride and p-nitrobenzoyl chloride is in agreement with the previously established phenolic hydroxyl content of lignosulphonate. Crosslinking of the lignosulphonates was achieved by reaction with terephthaloyl chloride. Resin formation was however, poor. Vernetzungsreaktionen der Ligninsulfonsäure. 5.

The Coupling of Lignosulphonate with Diazonium Salts SummarySpruce (Picea excelsa) and Wattle (Acacia mearnsii) lignosulphonates were reactcd with benzenediazoniumbisulphate, p-nitrobenzenediazoniumbisulphate and 4,4'-bis(biphenyl)diazoniumbisulphate. The extent to which azo groups were introduced, was calculated from the C:N ratios of the resulting products. Typically 0,3-0,45 azo groups were found for each monomeric lignin unit. Reaction with 4,4'bis(biphenyl)diazoniumbisulphate afforded resinous products, the wattle resin being more highly crosslinked than the spruce resin. Base hydrolysis of the lignosulphonate prior to diazo-coupling was found to affect the spruce resin adversely, whilst it had a positive effect on the wattle resin. Residual sulphite ions in the lignosulphonate were shown to necessitate the use of excess diazonium salt. Vernetzungsreaktionen der Ligninsulfonsäure. 2. Mitt. S0 3 Na MeO 2Only about 50% of the monomeric phenylpropane units in commercially produced lignosulphonate are sulphonated (Glcnnie 1971).
