Chromia-and alumina-forming commercial high temperature alloys and model alloys were preoxidized at 900 or 1OOO"C in Hz-HzO at a low oxygen potential. The oxide layers were characterized by different methods. The carbon permeation through the oxide layers was studied by exposing the preoxidized specimens to an atmosphere CO-COz-Hz-HzO, tagged with radiocarbon, for long time. The carbon was detected by stepwise polishing and measuring the radioactivity. A slow carbon ingress occurs through chromia layers, differences in the protection by the oxide scale could be tested by the radiotracer method for the different alloys. The alumina layer on Fe-6Al is not protective, but no carbon ingress could be detected for an alloy Fe-6A1-0.5Ti. Autoradiography, AES and X-ray structure analysis showed the presence of Ti(0,C) beneath the outer AlZO3-layer. The oxicarbide improves the nucleation and adherence of the Alz03 and prohibits the carbon penetration. The results were confirmed by gravimetric experiments, after preoxidation samples were exposed to CO-CO2-Hz-HZ0 at high carbon activity (ac = 1.02), carburization and graphite deposition were retarded or prohibited by dense and well adherent oxide layers.
The graphite deposition from carbonaceous atmospheres can initiate a catastrophic deterioration of alloys in high temperature corrosion. The graphite nucleation and growth is catalyzed by metal surfaces and affected by the presence of sulfur.Gravimetric studies have been performed on the carbon transfer from CH,-H, or CH4-HZ-H2S atmospheres to iron, nickel or ironnickel alloys at 1000 "C. The carbon activities were a, = 1 (equilibrium with graphite), a, = 5 or ac = 10; the sulfur pressure was in a range where the metal surfaces are nearly saturated with adsorbed sulfur. The carburization, i.e. the transfer of C into solid solution is retarded in the presence of sulfur since surface sites are blocked for the methane decomposition. In the sulfur-free environment graphite layers grow with their basal planes parallel to the metal surfacefor nickel an epitaxial growth occurs which is extremely slow. In the presence of sulfur the graphite can only nucleate in small islets which grow to irregular nodules. This results in a retardation by sulfur of the graphitisation on iron, whereas the growth of graphite on nickel is accelerated by sulfur. The transition between these ways of graphitisation behaviour was studied for Fe-Ni.Graphitabscheidung aus kohlenstoffhaltigen Atmospharen kann einen katastrophalen Korrosionsangnff auf Legierungen bei hohen Temperaturen auslosen.
