Exchanger-OsO(4) catalysts are prepared by an ion-exchange technique using layered double hydroxides and quaternary ammonium salts covalently bound to resin and silica as ion-exchangers. The ion-exchangers with different characteristics and opposite ion selectivities are specially chosen to produce the best heterogeneous catalyst that can operate using the various cooxidants in the asymmetric dihydroxylation reaction. LDH-OsO(4) catalysts composed of different compositions are evaluated for the asymmetric dihydroxylation of trans-stilbene. Resin-OsO(4) and SiO(2)-OsO(4) designed to overcome the problems associated with LDH-OsO(4) indeed show consistent activity and enantioselectivity in asymmetric dihydroxylation of olefins using K(3)Fe(CN)(6) and molecular oxygen as cooxidants. Compared to the Kobayashi heterogeneous systems, resin-OsO(4) is a very efficient catalyst for the dihydroxylation of a wide variety of aromatic, aliphatic, acyclic, cyclic, mono-, di-, and trisubstituted olefins to afford chiral vicinal diols with high yields and enantioselectivities irrespective of the cooxidant used. Resin-OsO(4) is recovered quantitatively by a simple filtration and reused for a number of cycles with consistent activity. The high binding ability of the heterogeneous osmium catalyst enables the use of an equimolar ratio of ligand to osmium to give excellent enantioselectives in asymmetric dihydroxylation in contrast to the homogeneous osmium system in which excess molar quantities of the expensive chiral ligand to osmium are invariably used. The complexation of the chiral ligand (DHQD)(2)PHAL, having very large dimension, a prerequisite to obtain higher ee, is possible only with the OsO(4)(2-) located on the surface of the supports.
Sorghum downy mildew caused by Peronosclerospora sorghi is a major disease of maize and resistance is under the control of polygenes which necessitated identification of quantitative-trait loci (QTLs) for initiating marker-assisted introgression of resistant QTLs in elite susceptible inbred lines. In the present study, QTLs for sorghum downy mildew (SDM) resistance in maize were identified based on cosegregation with linked simple sequence repeats in 185 F2 progeny from a cross between susceptible (CM500-19) and resistant (MAI105) parents. F3 families were screened in the National Sorghum Downy Mildew Screening Nursery during 2010 and 2011. High heritability was observed for the disease reaction. The final map generated using 87 SSR markers had 10 linkage groups, spanning a length of 1210.3 cM. Although, we used only 87 SSR markers for mapping, the per cent of genome within 20 cM to the nearest marker was 88.5. Three putative QTLs for SDM resistance were located on chromosomes 3 (bin 3.01), 6 (bin 6.01) and 2 (bin 2.02) using composite interval mapping. The locus on chromosome 3 had a major effect and explained up to 12.6% of the phenotypic variation. The other two QTLs on chromosomes 6 and 2 had minor effects with phenotypic variation of 7.1 and 2%. The three QTLs appeared to have additive effects on resistance. The QTLs on chromosomes 3 and 6 were successfully used in the marker-assisted selection programme for introgression of resistance to SDM in eight susceptible maize lines.
Coumarin-based 1,4-disubstituted 1,2,3-triazole derivatives were synthesized using a highly efficient, ecofriendly protocol via a copper(I)-catalyzed click reaction between various substituted arylazides and terminal alkynes. The synthetic route was easy to access and gave excellent yields under microwave irradiation conditions compared to the conventional heating route. The structures of all the compounds were characterized by IR, 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. All the synthesized compounds were screened for their in vitro antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities; among all compounds, 8a, 8j, 8k and 8l exhibited better results with respect to standard drugs.Furthermore, molecular docking studies have been carried out with PDB IDs 2VCX (anti-inflammatory), 3VXI (antioxidant), 4GEE (antimicrobial) and 2XFH (antifungal) using the Glide module of the Schrödinger suite. The final compounds 8d, 8e, 8h, and 8k showed the highest hydrogen bond interactions with His-88 and Val-191 proteins and with water in all the proteins.
The electroantennogram recording technique (EAG) was used to study the olfactory sensitivity of Apanteles obliquae (Hym., Braconidae), a gregarious larval endoparasitoid of Spilosoma obliqua (Walker) (Lep., Arctiidae), to 25 general plant volatiles belonging to alcohol, aldehyde and terpenoid groups and also to volatiles from the host and plant–host complex. The EAG data indicated different olfactory sensitivity between the sexes, not only to individual plant volatiles but also to the volatiles from host and plant–host complex. Females were found to be more responsive than males. However the synthetic sex pheromone blend of the host insect elicited similar EAG responses in both sexes. The EAG data of the present study is correlated with the reported behaviour observed in other parasitoids.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
