It was demonstrated experimentally in rabbits that the duration of caloric nystagmus did not always represent the activity of the peripheral labyrinthine function. The rabbit which has an unbalance in peripheral labyrinth function shows the spontaneous nystagmus, but it disappeares gradually by the central compensation. In these rabbits it is found that the spontaneous nystagmus is induced by an unbalance in central pathway of the labyrinth.after caloric stimulation, thereby the duration of nystagmus is prolonged. When the cerebellum was injured, the duration of nystagmus was prolonged by caloric stimul.ation of peripheral labyrinth, but directional preponderance was not reverled distinctly, when theperipheral labyrinth was kept in the balance.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
