All commercial alumina-silica refractories were found to be wetted and subsequently penetrated on exposure to molten aluminum. Penetration and silicon pickup by the aluminum was independent of porosity, grade of refractory, and source of the refractory material. The rate of penetration was governed by the diffusion of aluminum and silicon. The adherence of build-up to alumina-silica refractories is related to the silica content of the refractories.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
