Anhand einfacher Beobachtungen des Wasserhaushalts von eingetopften Fichten sowie Messungen im Freiland wird versucht, die Zusammenhänge zwischen dem Pflanzenwasserpotential und dem Wasserpotential von Boden und Atmosphäre zu diskutieren. Bei feuchtem Boden bestimmt die Atmosphäre den Wasserhaushalt der Fichten. Je höher der Verdunstungsanspruch der Atmosphäre wird und je geringer die hydraulische Leitfähigkeit im Boden, um so schwieriger wird es für die Pflanze, entstehende Wassergehaltsverluste wieder aufzufüllen. Sie muß damit ihre potentiell mögliche Transpirationsrate zunehmend einschränken. Für kurzfristige Betrachtungen kommt damit dem pflanzeninternen Wasserspeicher eine besondere Bedeutung zu. Dieser Speicher gibt die Größenordnung einer Wasseraufnahme über die Blattorgane an, deren prinzipielle Möglichkeit durch verschiedene Beobachtungen wahrscheinlich gemacht werden kann.
