Im labortechnischen Maßstab wurde die hydraulische und pneumatische Auslegung eines Bioreaktors, der vor Ort zur Sanierung eines BTEX‐belasteten Grundwassers eingesetzt werden sollte, simuliert und optimiert. Dabei wurden konventionell erhältliche Polypropylen‐Ringe, die als Füllkörper im Festbettreaktor vor Ort eingesetzt wurden, in Laborreaktoren bezüglich ihrer Eignung als Trägermaterial mit Blähton‐Granulat verglichen. Es zeigte sich, daß aufgrund der hohen Flüchtigkeit der BTEX‐Verbindungen der in der Pilotanlage mit 10.6 m3 Nutzvolumen vorgesehene Luftvolumenstrom von 100 m3 h–1 auf unter 0.7 m3 h–1 reduziert werden sollte, um die Einfahrphase des Reaktors zu verkürzen. Anderenfalls werden die BTEX‐Aromaten aus dem Reaktorsystem ausgestrippt und stehen der Biofilmbildung nicht mehr als Substrat zur Verfügung. Die vorgesehene hydraulische Belastung des Reaktors von 5 m3 pro Quadratmeter Reaktorquerschnittsfläche und Stunde erwies sich für das Aufwachsen des Biofilms hingegen als unproblematisch. Bei blasenfreier Belüftung konnten nach Erreichen des steady‐state‐Betriebes innerhalb einer Stunde Aufenthaltszeit im Blähton‐Festbett mindestens 97% des kanzerogenen Benzols und 99% der BTEX‐Aromaten eliminiert werden. Im Polypropylen‐Festbett wurden unter gleichen Versuchsbedingungen maximal 94% des Benzols und 83% aller BTEX‐Aromaten biologisch eliminiert. Als Trägermaterial für den Biofilm erwiesen sich demnach die Füllkörper aus Blähton den Polypropylen‐Ringen überlegen.
