Frequency shifts and depolarization factors for the Raman lines of the S2O6“ion in aqueous solution are given. Three p and three dp lines are found. This proves ‐ in agreement with a conclusion drawn already by Duval and Lecomte from other evidence ‐, that the S2O6″ion has the staggered ethane‐like configuration with symmetry D3d. A few calculations for this ion are communicated. The Raman spectra of S3O6″ and S4O6″ in aqueous solution are determined. Incomplete polarization measurements for the Raman lines of the tetrathionate ion are given.
It is generally assumed that the thiosulphate ion S,O," has the structure S-SO,, a sulphate ion in which one of the oxygen atoms is replaced by sulphur. In a preliminary investigation of th'2 crystal structure of ammonium, magnesium and nickel thiosulphate performed in Leyden a number of years ago, indications were obtained, that the thiosulphate ion in the magnesium compound might possess the plane structure whereas the results for ammonium thiosulphate may be explained with the same plane model. It appeared of interest to study the structure of the thiosulphate ion therefore with the help of spectroscopic methods, following a suggestion of Professor Ketelaar, who drew our attention to the problem in question. Our work was started in 1942. A study was made of the Raman effect of solid ammonium thiosulphate, which did not give satisfactory results. W e decided to study the Raman effect of Na,S,O, in aqueous solutions. Not only frequencies but also the depolarization ratios of the Raman lines were determined. The work was completed last year after
The preparation of a compound corresponding to the formula N,O, .3 SO, is given. Neither in the manner of preparation described by In 1907 Pictet and Karl 1 ) described among other substances an addition compound of N20S with SO3, to which they ascribed the composition N , 0 5 . 4 SO:<. They obtained it by a simultaneous distillation of N,05 and SOR. (in a ratio of about l : 4 ) which gives according to Pictef and Karl the compounds N,O,. 4 SO, and A number of years ago already we decided to make a study of the first compound of Pictet c.s., in order to try to get an insight into its molecular structure. Following the technique described by Pictet and Karl -i.e. by distilling a mixture of N20B with 4 SO3 -we did not obtain the compound N,OS. 4 S0:I however, but a substance with an average composition of N z 0 4 . 3 SOR. a compound which in the following will be designed as I.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
