In this paper we present two novel approaches for enhancing active thermography for nondestructive testing: the hybrid camera setup is used to merge IR images with additional color images to provide the inspector with additional information on the screen. In order to make the evaluation of the data even more intuitive a real-view setup is presented that uses a projection technique to let the inspector view and interact with the measurement results directly on the part in a very intuitive way.
For better evaluation of infrared measurements in non-destructive testing, especially for objects with complex geometry or small dimensions, it is beneficial to combine with the same viewing angle an image of a camera in the visible range with the image of an infrared camera. In the hybrid camera developed by us, a beam splitter is used which combines the visible and the infrared wavelength regions under the same viewing angle to form a hybrid image. The applications of this new technique range from the localization and the verification of false indications in non-destructive testing applications to the retrieval of 3D surface information with a hybrid picture as texture with defect indications and the filtering of laser markings displayed in the IR image to area and process monitoring.
The spectral selective thermography with infrared filters can be used to determine or to distinguish materials such as contaminations on a metallic component. With additional visual information, the indications by the IR signal can be selectively accentuated or suppressed for easier evaluation of passive and active thermography measurements. For flash thermography the detected IR signal between 3.4 and 5.1 µm is analyzed with regard to the spectral material information.
