Este trabajo se realizó en las cinco subregiones del Departamento de Sucre, durante los meses de febrero y junio de 2009, con el fin de caracterizar el hábitat de Bradypus variegatus y su utilización por parte de esta especie. Para esto se realizaron observaciones directas y captura visual de los perezosos, se determinaron las especies de árboles en que se encontraban y se obtuvo su altura, DAP y cobertura, así como los sitios exactos donde se encontraban los individuos. Se observaron 33 ejemplares de B. variegatus y el árbol más frecuentado por los perezosos y de mayor importancia fue ceiba bonga (Ceiba pentandra) debido a que es una especie que posee características que pueden satisfacer muchas de las necesidades de estos organismos. Además fueron determinadas las especies de flora y fauna asociadas con los sitios que frecuenta la especie en mención. Los animales fueron observados principalmente en las partes altas de los árboles, sobre todo entre las 0600 y las 1400. En el departamento de Sucre la principal amenaza que atenta contra la supervivencia de los perezosos es la destrucción y fragmentación del hábitat, debido a la alta deforestación de los bosques secos tropicales, como consecuencia de la expansión agrícola, ganadera y la agricultura tradicional.
