Drei Gründe sind es, die der Hepatitis epidemica ihre besondere Bedeutung geben: a. die Häufigkeit, b. die lange Krankheitsdauer, c. die Gefahr von Spät-und Dauerschäden. Es sei schon hier darauf hingewiesen, daß sich unsere Ausführungen beschränken sollen auf die typische epidemische Form dieser Erkrankung, daß auf die unter dem Namen Serumhepatitis oder homologer Serumikterus laufenden Krankheitsbilder nicht eingegangen werden soll.Die Hepatitis epidemica, die während des zweiten Weltkrieges fast pandemischen Charakter annahm -nach Gutzeit sollen allein auf deutscher Seite 5-6 Millionen Soldaten daran erkrankt sein -, stellt auch heute noch eine der häufigsten Erkrankungen dar. Nach Störmer macht sie etwa 6°/o aller internen Krankheitsfälle aus. Neuere Erhebungen aus der Innsbrucker Klinik sprechen von 4°/o des internen Krankheitsgutes.
