This article is an update of an article five of us published in 1992. The areas of Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) and Multiattribute Utility Theory (MAUT) continue to be active areas of management science research and application. This paper extends the history of these areas and discusses topics we believe to be important for the future of these fields.
Management science and decision science have grown exponentially since midcentury. Two closely-related fields central to this growth are multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) and multiattribute utility theory (MAUT). This paper comments on the history of MCDM and MAUT and discusses topics we believe are important in their continued development and usefulness to management science over the next decade. In this paper a man-machine interactive mathematical programming method is presented for solving the multiple criteria problem involving a single decision maker. It is assumed that all decision-relevant criteria or objective functions are concave functions to be maximized, and that the constraint set is convex. The overall utility function is assumed to be unknown explicitly to the decision maker, but is assumed to be implicitly a linear function, and more generally a concave function of the objective functions. To solve a problem involving multiple objectives the decision maker is requested to provide answers to yes and no questions regarding certain trade offs that he likes or dislikes. Convergence of the method is proved; a numerical example is presented. Tests of the method as well as an extension of the method for solving integer linear programming problems are also described.
The use of robo-readers to analyze news texts is an emerging technology trend in computational finance. Recent research has developed sophisticated financial polarity lexicons for investigating how financial sentiments relate to future company performance. However, based on experience from fields that commonly analyze sentiment, it is well known that the overall semantic orientation of a sentence may differ from that of individual words. This article investigates how semantic orientations can be better detected in financial and economic news by accommodating the overall phrasestructure information and domain-specific use of language. Our three main contributions are the following: (a) a human-annotated finance phrase bank that can be used for training and evaluating alternative models; (b) a technique to enhance financial lexicons with attributes that help to identify expected direction of events that affect sentiment; and (c) a linearized phrase-structure model for detecting contextual semantic orientations in economic texts. The relevance of the newly added lexicon features and the benefit of using the proposed learning algorithm are demonstrated in a comparative study against general sentiment models as well as the popular word frequency models used in recent financial studies. The proposed framework is parsimonious and avoids the explosion in feature space caused by the use of conventional n-gram features.
We develop a procedure and the requisite theory for incorporating preference information in a novel way in the efficiency analysis of Decision Making Units. The efficiency of Decision Making Units is defined in the spirit of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), complemented with Decision Maker's preference information concerning the desirable structure of inputs and outputs. Our procedure begins by aiding the Decision Maker in searching for the most preferred combination of inputs and outputs of Decision Making Units (for short, Most Preferred Solution) which are efficient in DEA. Then, assuming that the Decision Maker's Most Preferred Solution maximizes his/her underlying (unknown) value function, we approximate the indifference contour of the value function at this point with its possible tangent hyperplanes. Value Efficiency scores are then calculated for each Decision Making Unit comparing the inefficient units to units having the same value as the Most Preferred Solution. The resulting Value Efficiency scores are optimistic approximations of the true scores. This paper suggests a preference based methodology, which incorporates an evolutionary multiobjective optimization algorithm to lead a decision-maker to the most preferred solution of her or his choice. The progress towards the most preferred solution is made by accepting preference based information progressively from the decision maker after every few generations of an evolutionary multiobjective optimization algorithm. This preference information is used to model a strictly increasing value function, which is used for the subsequent iterations of the EMO algorithm. In addition to the development of the value function which satisfies DM's preference information, the proposed progressively interactive EMO (PI-EMO) approach utilizes the constructed value function in directing EMO algorithm's search to more preferred solutions. This is accomplished using a preference-based domination principle and utilizing a preference based termination criterion. Results on two to five-objective optimization problems using the progressively interactive NSGA-II approach shows the simplicity of the proposed approach and its future promise. A parametric study involving the algorithm's parameters reveals interesting insights of parameter interactions and indicates useful parameter values. A number of extensions to this study are also suggested.
