This article provides a brief outline of the history of the Rorschach in the United Kingdom (UK) from 1933, when it was “discovered” by Theodora Alcock and her colleagues, to the present day. It describes the professional group established to ensure the maintenance of high standards in the use of the Rorschach and other projective tests; the contribution made by the both the Tavistock Clinic and the Tavistock Institute for Human Relations (TIHR) in London to the teaching, training, and supervision in the Rorschach; the early use made of the Rorschach in clinical practice; the international links, which included the British Rorschach Forum acting as host for the International Rorschach Society (IRS) Congress in London in 1968; and the decline in the use of the Rorschach, followed by a recent resurgence of interest.
This article presents a comparative pilot study using the Rorschach Test and a four-session psychodynamic consultation for adolescents attending an outpatient clinic. The study used a comparative qualitative approach to look at how both approaches can help in the assessment of young people experiencing psychological and emotional difficulties. Specifically, the study assessed whether the Rorschach might be useful for engaging young people in the assessment process and explored whether it could add anything to this process, above and beyond the standard four-session psychodynamic consultation.
