Although well established elsewhere, cultural geomorphology has not yet been well-grounded in Northeast India where a perceived dearth of studies in this sub-branch of geography exists. The Brahmaputra valley, which has a long physical and cultural history, is a unique laboratory, which offers opportunities to study anthropo-geomorphologic, achaeo-geomorphologic and cultural landscapes. The Majuli river island, ostensibly the largest island in the world, houses traditional art crafts and dances, despite being continually under the siege of a plethora of physical obstacles such as flooding, bank erosion, etc. The present study aims at studying how the physical processes that constantly reshape the map of the island exert their influence on the socio-economic and cultural milieu of the region. The paper further analyses why despite all odds Majuli thrives and continues to preserve and maintain its rich natural and cultural heritage, in ways that are perhaps unparalleled in the region or even elsewhere in the globe.
In many parts of the world, plantation labour is one of the lowest paid work categories in which women are highly marginalized. The Sivasagar district of Assam is predominated by tea gardens. Historically, this district has always had tea gardens and tea garden companies. This article highlights the idea of 'feminization of work' by differentiating the public/private spaces based on the dichotomy of 'open/closed' space in tea bagans (tea gardens) in the district, and focuses on the division of permanent and faltu (temporary) labourers and how women are trapped in these dichotomies. The article carries the narratives of women labourers from two tea gardens, which will be referred to as Tea Garden A and Tea Garden B, in the district, collected through interviews.
A generation ago, the word "stress" was reserved for adults. People think that childhood is a time when children are carefree, having no worries or responsibilities. But children also experience extreme stress, have similar symptoms as those of adults and have difficulty in handling stress. The purpose of this study was to study the prevalence and levels of stress during late childhood in relation to gender and educational standard. A total number of 192 children within the range of 6-11 years were selected randomly as sample for the study from eight different private schools from N.C. Hills district of Assam. An interview schedule was prepared to elicit background information, sources of stress and symptoms of stress exhibit by the children. The Interview schedule was constructed separately for the teachers and parents. The findings of the present study revealed that stress was prevalent during late childhood. But stress was more prevalent in the first and fifth grade compared to the other grades. Majority of the boys and girls were moderately stressed.
