Addition of Alkanes to OlefmsA New Synthetic Method The alkylmercuric salts 7, 10, and 11 react with NaBH, in the presence of the electron deficient olefins 8 ak to form the products 9, 12, and 13, respectively (tables 3 and 4). The yields depend on the addition mode of NaBH, (table l), the ratio olefin/alkylmercuric salt (table l ) , and the reaction temperature (table 2). A radical chain mechanism is proposed (equations 2-6) for the formation of the products 9,12, and 13 which is a formal addition of the alkanes RH to the olefins 8. The crucial point of this new synthesis is the different selectivity of the radical R and the adduct radical 1 in the competing attack at the hydrogen of RHgH (4) and the p-carbon of the olefins 8ak (scheme 2).Eine typische Reaktion von Alkyl-Radikalen ist ihr Angriff auf olefinische Doppelbindungen ').
The presence of a negative partial charge on the benzylic carbon atom in the transition state (1) can be deduced from the experimentally determinable Hammett ϱ values. Alkyl radicals R˙ are accordingly seen to develop nucleophilic properties during addition to olefins.
Selectivity of Dihalocarbenes in Cycloaddition Reactions**)Dihalocarbenes 1 ae yield in the 2-methyl-2-butene/2-methylpropene competition system the cyclopropanes 2 a -e and 3a-e. Whereas selectivity increases at 293 K in the sequence CBr, < CClBr < CCl, < CFCl< CF,, at 393 K the order of carbene selectivity is reversed: CF, < CFCl< CCl, < CClBr < CBr, ( Table 1). At 360 K (isoselective temperature) the carbenes l a -e react with equal selectivity. The reason for this is that activation enthalpies and activation entropies are changed in the same direction with variation of carbene substituents from fluorine to bromine (Table 2). Thereby the selectivities of CClBr and CBr, increase with increasing temperature (Figure 2). -Above and below 360 K the order of the slopes of carbenes 1 ae are reversed in the Skell-Moss diagram (Figure 3). *) Korrespondenz bitte an diesen Autor richten. prim-, sec-, and tert-alkyl radicals in the competition system BrCCI3/CCl4
