T HE issue of cost has long been one of concern to fundraisers, not only so that individuals can ensure that adequate returns are generated by their charity's resources but also to ensure that this is seen to be the case by those who support the organization. There are now well over 184,000 registered charities in England and Wales (Charity Commission, 1997), many of which are seeking to solicit funds from an increasingly fatigued general public. As Schmittlein and Peterson (1994) note, the donor pool is becoming deluged with increasingly sophisticated solicitations, making it difficult for an individual charity to make its voice heard.Clearly, one way charities can facilitate donations is to develop an understanding of donor motivations for giving and then act accordingly. Die Entwicklung ökonomischer Zeitreihen wird häufig von saisonalen Einflüssen überlagert. Am Beispiel des deutschen Bruttoinlandsprodukts (BIP) wird gezeigt, wie sich Saisoneinflüsse auswirken und mit welchen Methoden sie aus der Originalreihe herausgerechnet werden können. Dabei werden gleitende Durchschnitte und zentrierte Binärvariablen angewandt sowie die Saisonbereinigungsverfahren der amtlichen Statistik vorgestellt.
